Prepping in the midst of collapse.

The news is impressively bad, every which way you look. The climate is erratic, the emperor is deranged, the economy is on the verge of some profoundly unpleasant convulsion. People, animals, and ecosystems are suffering in previously unimaginable ways. It's shaping up to be a truly apocalyptic year.

And yet, here we are! We meet, we talk, we help each other cope with current problems and plan for future solutions. We hold each others' hands (figuratively if not literally) and reassure each other that in some way—in a way which we can't fully articulate—everything is okay, and will be okay.

How can this make sense? Why is it useful for us to gather together and share our ideas about how to live in a world that is becoming unrecognizable before our very eyes? What benefits can we reap? What goals can we achieve? Why do we spend our precious time on Earth in this quixotic pursuit?

The short answer is: Because we love each other. The simple human desire to be together and to take care of each other is more powerful than any force of evil. We may lose the battle, but we will win the war.

Practical Strategy

In the meantime, we must be practical. We need information, tools, and skills to protect ourselves and our loved ones from encroaching disaster. The Solidarity Prepping Group and the inspirational Kollapscamp are the methods we use to develop the capabilities we need.

Our strategy is this: We have a list of topics, or themes, that we want to investigate. Week by week, we are discussing these themes, two at a time. So far, we have discussed:

  • 14 February: Working with others, How to die well.
  • 28 February: Breakdown of systems, Food preparedness.
  • 21 March: Medical and emotional support, Collective self-protection.

and, coming up this Saturday:

  • 4 April: Communication, Food supply & logistics.

We here at the Solidarity Prepping Group have our own list of topics for discussion. Additionally, our colleagues from Kollapscamp, Tadzio MĂĽller and Scully (Cindy Peter), have chosen four particular themes for their upcoming practical camp: "Mutual Aid H.E.A.T. - Hostile Environment Awareness Training," to be held in Germany in September 2026:

  1. Communications
  2. Collective Self-Protection
  3. Food Supply and Logistics
  4. Medical and Emotional Support.

Our most recent discussion (21 March) and the upcoming one (4 April) cover these four topics. We are talking about them to prepare for a visit by Tadzio and Scully at a webinar on Saturday 18 April. (Register here.)

Sharing knowledge

We want to start sharing knowledge among ourselves in a structured way. Kat Soares, our principal Convener for the Solidarity Prepping Group, will soon be reaching out to you, our members, to discover who among you has experience and expertise that you would like to share. Also, she will ask what particular topics you would like to learn more about.

We will structure our meetings to hear from knowledgeable people in a seminar style, and then break out into groups to discuss what we have heard. The meetings will be recorded and posted for the public. In this way, we can develop a collection of useful and encouraging presentations, to spread the knowledge of Solidarity Prepping and to broaden the reach of our community.
