Kat's Marvelous Adventure - Seminar Recording
Hear the story of Kat Soares' "accidental adaptation" in Scotland, where stormy winds threatened her farm. She dug a giant hole in the ground, and built a sheltered greenhouse (a "walipini") which is the centerpiece of her sustainable homestead.
When storm Arwen in 2021 blew down 30% of the standing trees on Kat Soares' newly-bought, acre-sized farm, she was afraid she'd made a horrible mistake. "We can never grow food here," she thought.
But Kat and her husband John did not give up. They dug an "enormous hole in the ground" without knowing exactly what would go in it, but knowing that they had to get out of the wind. Kat's friend Wendy suggested a "walipini," an in-ground greenhouse originally invented in Bolivia.

They built it. Today, they are growing vegetables all year round, using rainwater harvested from the many roofs on their property. Also, they built raised beds out in the open, and they've planted the beginnings of an orchard. They have chickens for eggs, and a fire-circle for ceremonies. Kat and John are always working, and the work is its own reward.
Kat says these are the important lessons she's learned:
- There's no such thing as "finished."
- Don't be attached to outcome; remaining responsive is key.
- Embrace your mistakes, but don't make the same one twice.
- Celebrate every success, no matter how small.
