What is Collapse Club?

We gather so that we are not alone. We gather to metabolize our grief. We gather to understand what it can mean to have hope at the end of the world.

We have discovered something marvelous! There are as many perspectives as there are people. Everyone has their own ideas, their own practices, their own wisdom. We do not seek for one grand, correct idea; we seek to learn from everyone we meet.

We do find commonality! Everyone loves the world, and grieves its passing. Everyone feels anxiety about the absurd and cruel behavior we sometimes witness from our fellow humans (and sometimes from ourselves). Everyone desires that love will spread throughout the world and bring healing.

We share a collective melancholy, because we see the trajectory of history tending toward a difficult and unhappy ending. And yet we share a collective joy, because we feel the power of individual love and individual action, no matter how strange and uncomfortable our circumstances may be.

We are open to the idea of an overarching spiritual power, but we do not require “God” to exist in any particular form. The power that we feel cannot be described, because it defies words. We can only give ourselves over to the flow of love which manifests itself in our lives, and in every life.

As time goes on, the strictures and uncertainties of collapse will grow larger and will intrude more heavily into our lives. We seek to prepare for these times, by weaving ourselves solidly into the fabric of the world. The more tightly we are bound to reality, the more secure we are in our destiny; we are protected from the bizarre and unnatural fantasies which spring up during times of dissolution.

We seek love; we seek truth. We come together to share what we know and what we are learning. We give comfort to each other, and we accept what is given. In the gentle mingling of voices we hear the music of the gods, and we sing along.

This article explores the cognitive dissonance created by the psychological tension between participating in industrial civilization, all the while, believing in its inevitable downfall (destruction) and how communities navigate and accept this emotionally painful experience.

I have attended Al-Anon meetings for 29 years and I still use this prayer to help me keep a balanced attitude. Can I also use this simple prayer to help me cope with the collapse of civilization? Is it even possible to have “serenity” in these changing times?

In a recent Collapse Club meeting, I had the chance to hear from some “young people,” which in this context means people in their mid-30s. This is a different demographic than the mainstream of our participants, who tend to be in their 50s and older.
